When adding a lower level bar to a home, it is important to design a bar that embodies easy entertainment; remembering these three factors when designing your in-home bar will allow for your bar to be put to great use and your money to be well-spent!
1. FOOD AND COLD BEVERAGE STORAGE
When entertaining, it is very important to have enough storage space for the necessary items needed like beverages and appetizers! For example, adding a full size refrigerator rather than a mini fridge will allow for more cold beverage and food storage space. This will also allow you to skip the use of a beverage bucket which can end up taking up more counter space.
2. SPACE + BAR SIZE
We also consider available space for the bar and seating as a factor of functionality and design, some homes allow for larger bars with seating for 4+ and others can only accommodate 2-3 seats. In the case of having room for a smaller bar with seating for 2-3 consider adding a second high top that is separate from the bar and closer to the media room, like this lower level bar we designed (image on left).
3. STORAGE FOR GLASSWARE
Glassware and other bar essentials also need storage space. Some glassware may be display worthy, which calls for either display cabinetry with glass doors or open floating shelves (adding puck lighting to either of these options will really draw attention to your display items). It is very important to consider what kind of glassware you would like to display before getting into the cabinet design phase of your bar.
Another tip: Before designing cabinetry, consider any specialty items you need stored inside your bar cabinets, items like; large serving platters or tall drink dispensers-doing so will allow ample amounts of storage space for these specialty items.
